IBS Lecture - SOCIAL STORIES FROM INDIA (3/3) - The Blessings of Free Enterprise
For the past twenty-or-so years, Francis Laleman has been witnessing enormous changes in Indian society, bringing about social upheaval of unprecedented dimension. In the autumn series Social Stories from India he shares with the audience a three-some of drivers which are at play, pondering over the question what the global community can learn from experiences, failures and best practices in India. This third and last session in the series explores the Blessings of Free Enterprise - a subject which lies at the core of India's entrepreneurial success. With examples taken from many of India's foremost businesses, and spiced with quotes from some of the main Indian economical commentators (a/o the celebrated Gurcharan Das), Francis builds his case, entailing some unexpected conclusions and a comprehensive list of lessons to be learned.

The autumn series Art Stories from India, with Francis Laleman, focuses on three (groups of) Indian artists from the 19-20th century in the framework of bridging the so-called East/West cultural divide. The series aims at providing best practices in intercultural diversity and examines what we can learn from this. This third and last session in the series is on the life and work of the Bangali painter Nandalal Bose (1882-1966), one of Shantiniketan's foremost students and teachers, and without any doubt one of the major Indian artists having influenced the concept of modern Indian art.

For the past twenty-or-so years, Francis Laleman has been witnessing enormous changes in Indian society, bringing about social upheaval of unprecedented dimension. In the autumn series Social Stories from India he shares with the audience a three-some of drivers which are at play, pondering over the question what the global community can learn from experiences, failures and best practices in India. This second session is inspired by celebrated diplomat, writer and public intellectual Kishore Mahbubani. It explores the validity of Human Rights and Freedom of Press in the developing world, asking sometimes painful questions, and reflecting on how the Asian sphere is coming to grips with shedding the global supremacy of its European cultural, political and philosophical legacy.

De dienst gaat door in de kathedraal op zaterdag 14 januari om 10:00 uur, voorgegaan door EH Bruno Aerts, vicaris van het Bisdom Antwerpen. Television Broadcast - VT4 (Belgium) - 20:45 hrs - "DINA" (Series: Vermist 3)
Tonight is the public broadcast on television of a film by Joel Vanhoebrouck which was partly shot on location at Bayt al-Andalus. The film is part of Vermist, an EYEWORKS FILMS series co-directed by Vanhoebrouck and Jan Verheyen and produced by Philippe Deschepper. Dina is about a Morroccon girl who disappears on her return in Belgium after she was promised in marriage during a holiday in the homeland. All scenes supposedly set in Morrocco are actually taken in Bayt al-Andalus. In Dina, the star actors Axel Daeseleire, Joke Devynck, Kevin Janssens and Stan Van Samang are joined by guest roles done by Elisabeth Puglia, Geert Hunaerts and Amid Chakir (Brussels by Night, Crazy Love). Dunya Open Seminar - Bing Fa, or: The Art of War
You might think of waging a war (We certainly hope you are not!), or you might consider strategems to improve your business (We do hope you are!), or you might be on the verge of stress induced collapse unless you find means to make your leadership style more efficient (Be sure we do empathise!): whatever your initial condition might be, this workshop is for you, dear manager! From a Chinese classic from remote antiquity, Francis Laleman takes a series of pragmatic hints, allusions and advices, and translates these into our modern business jargon. And see: all of a sudden we realise that we are not the first to be struggling with this or that problem or this or that piece of nuisance. A Story-telling Afternoon - The Adventures of Feluda
Satyajit Ray (1921-1992) is not only remembered and India’s most memorable film maker of the 20th century, but als as the author of a series of children books, most notably around the central character of private detective Feluda and his clever little nephew Topshe. This afternoon, Francis Laleman becomes Feluda, taking his audience through three of Stayajit Ray’s Bengal mysteries at once. The event, which takes place on several location in and around Bayt al-Andalus, including the street, the square and the park, is for children between 5 and 85 years old. Film Screening – Rituparno Ghosh: Raincoat (2004)
In Raincoat, Rituparno Ghosh has brilliantly merged aspects of the old-Indian saga of Krishna and Radha with a retelling of the celebrated novel The Gift of the Magi by the American novelist O. Henry. During an apocalyptic monsoon rainstorm, two ex-lovers meet for the first time after many years. Both wish the other to believe how happy and successful he/she now is. But nothing really is what it seems... The film is brillantly shot, with a stunning soundtrack by Subdha Mudghal. A true classic, this story situated in a psychiatric ward in Calcutta, shortly after the Indo-Chinese war of 1962. Film Screening - Satyajit Ray: Mahanagar – The Big City (1963)
Mahanagar (The Big City) is Satyajit Ray’s tribute to the famous Abataranikastory by Narendranath Mitra (1916-1975). The film, considered a milestone in Indian feminist circles, follows a woman who gradually escapes from her traditional gender stereotype, and in the process discovers herself, her ambitions, and the limits posed by ethical and moral self-reflection. From Calcutta to Oxford with Nirad Chaudhuri (lecture)
Francis Laleman follows the trail of the Bengali author and political philosopher Nirad Chaudhuri (1897-1999), one of the most remarkable intellectual geniuses of the last century. Born and raised in Calcutta in the context of the Great Bengal Renaissance, Chaudhuri started publishing on his 59th birthday, and ended his long and fruitful life in Oxford, England, musing on the political and philosophical lessons of yesteryear and challenges of today. Mirza Asadullah Ghalib, A Theatrical Biography
In a multi-media production, Francis Laleman evokes a genuine Mushairah (poet’s gathering) at Bayt al-Andalus. At the mean time, we travel through the life of the Mirza Asadullah Ghalib, India’s main 19-th century Urdu poet and representative of the twilight of Mughal culture.
The program includes a theatrical monologue, poetry recitings, music, singing, dancing, and video.

Mughal India at Bayt al-Andalus
Throughout 2009, Indian Mughal culture is a central theme to a series of activities at Bayt-al-Andalus.
Beyond Borders schedules 5 modules, 4 out of which are programmed in the spring of 2009 (from Februari till the end of June), consisting of in-house trainings, lectures, theatre, film showings, music, cuisine, and more.
The fifth module is a tour through Mughal India, scheduled for October 2009.

Aquarius soloists: Music on poems by Emily Dickenson
On October 18, Bayt al-Andalus once more hosts composer/cello player Marc Michael De Smet and three female soloists of the Aquarius Ensemble (formerly the Goeyvaerts Consort).
This new concert highlights just once author, Emily Dickenson. Her poems were set to music by Marc Michael De Smet with the voice of soloist Lieve Jansen in mind. Mrs Jansen will be accompagnied by backing vocals, with interludes played on harpsichord.

Een rugzak vol reisverhalen (met Sandra Van Kemseke)
On April 12 2008, Bayt al-Andalus hosts actress, globe-trotter and storyteller Sandra Van Kemseke with a tailor-made program of travel stories.
Sandra brings a series of objects from around the world, and members of the audience are free to point at any of these, whereupon Sandra tells one of her stories connected to the object. In this way, the audience creates the performance along with the actress - and it is hard to predict where we will end up! For further details: click here.

Alles wat waar is
On Februari 23 Bayt al-Andalus hosts composer/cello player Marc Michael De Smet and three female soloists of the Aquarius Ensemble (formerly the Goeyvaerts Consort).
The group brings musical settings of engaged poetry from a variety of authors, from the folksinger Pete Seeger to the celebrated Flemish poet Herman De Coninck.
